Why is uncooked food often better for us?

Human beings, like animals, claim a certain amount of space around their bodies. Scientists have discovered that animals suffer both physically and mentally when they are kept in overcrowded conditions. An example of this is the case of the deer population of James Island, off the coast of Maryland in the United States. Here, deer died in large numbers, solely, it seemed as a result of overpopulation. The stress caused by each deer’s personal territory (space or area) being decreased caused the animals to be overactive, and this ultimately brought about their death.

Human beings, too, show signs of stress when their personal territory is attacked. There are clearly defined distances at which we feel comfortable when dealing with (facing) different situations.

Our territory can be divided into four zones (areas). The most important zone is the one nearest to our bodies, the intimate zone. Only people who are emotionally close to us, for example, parents, children and very close friends, can enter this zone without causing discomfort. When a person who does not belong to these groups comes into this territory, our hearts may begin to beat faster. We usually back away to get out of this situation as soon as possible.

The next zone is the personal zone, which is the distance at which we feel comfortable having an ordinary friendly conversation, for example at a party. After that comes the social zone, the distance we like to keep from strangers and people we do not know very well. Finally, there is the public zone, which shows the distance we choose when addressing to a large group.
