Although you might not like ants when they get in your food or get into your home, ants are interesting tiny insects and do help the environment. They are advanced social insects, which live in highly organized large colonies where each group has complicated important relationships with many others and each carries out a specific task. The queen ant has wings and its primary function is to lay eggs. The other female ants are worker ants. They build the anthill, find food and even act as soldier ants. The soldier ants protect the queen, defend the colony, gather or kill food, and attack enemy colonies in search for food. If they defeat another ant colony, they take away eggs of the defeated ant colony. When the eggs hatch, the new ants become the "slave" ants for the colony.

Ants don’t have ears. Ants "hear" by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet. They can carry 20 times their own body weight. The muscle arrangement in an ant gives it great strength, allowing it to drag heavy things toward the entry point of the anthill. The design of the anthill varies depending on the species of ant. Their colonies can contain millions of ants. When a queen ant dies, the entire colony usually dies within a few months. Although many people may suppose that they aren’t dangerous, scientists have compiled a list of ant species which can hurt.
