I had an interesting experience last year. After I left a small village in the south of France, I drove to the next town. On the way, a young man was standing in the road. I stopped and he asked to sit in my car. As soon as he got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he answered in the same language. Apart from a few words, I did not know any French at all. We did not speak during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, “Do you speak English?” So I soon realized that he was English himself.

In Brazil you don`t need a pitch or expensive boots to play football. People play football in the street and on the beach. Children often play with no boots.

Some people think that Brazilians are good at football because they learn a special way to play when they are children. They learn to play a type of football called futsal. There are five players in each team. The ball is small, but it`s full of sand so it`s very heavy.

Futsal started in South America, but now it`s popular in many other countries.
