The Japanese education system was reformed after World War II. The old 6-5-3-3 system was changed to a 6-3-3-4 system (6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of senior high school and 4 years of university).

An important part of the education system in Japan is the juku, often known as ‘cram schools’. These private institutions are supposed to complement the lessons in regular schools and especially to prepare for entrance examinations to the next level of school. One third of Japanese children are sent to these institutions by their parents. Their classes are often held after regular school hours, on weekends, and during school vacations, leaving children and young people with little free time.

   Although the number of all school students who do a course of study after completing high school has been high in recent years and is still above 50%, it is generally very difficult to enter a Japanese university. The entrance examinations are especially difficult, but getting a degree from one of the famous universities raises the chances of finding a good job. There are basically two types of universities: those offering a four-year course; and those offering a short course, which lasts just two years and allows quicker entry into job market. The short courses are strongly popular with women.

As I walked through the jungle today, I paused to ....... on many things, including decisions I have made in my life, decisions that that were important, not only to me, but to many others in my life - family members, colleagues, friends, even acquaintances.

Perhaps we cannot ....... this world from being a world in which children suffer. But we can reduce the number of children who suffer physically and emotionally.
