As a baby, Isaac Newton was sick. During his first few months, he was not expected to live. But, he grew up to be one of the world’s greatest scientists. All through his boyhood, Newton was interested in mechanical toys. He was interested in kites, too. He used to go out early in the morning to fly his kites. Newton stopped school when he was 14. His mother was a widow, and she needed his help on their farm.
For the next two years, he tried to learn about farming, but he was not very successful. He would begin thinking about some new books or mechanical toys, and would forget his work. His mother finally decided that he would never be a farmer, and sent him to college. In a year or two, he began to work on the problem that made him famous. The problem was why the planets and moons follow the paths they do. And, when they are moving, why do not they go straight out into space? A story says that Newton started thinking about gravity when an apple fell from a tree and hit him. The story probably is not true even though gravity makes apples fall from apple trees to the ground.
