Scientists have found that influenza virus taken from humans can cause the disease in animals. In addition, humans can catch the disease from animals. Among animals, a greater number of wild birds seem to carry the virus without showing any signs of illness. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may have infected some birds that have lived on the Earth for about 100 million years and are able to carry the viruses without even having the disease. There is even enough data to show that different types of the viruse are transmitted from place to place and from continent to continent by traveling birds.

It is known that two influenza viruses can combine when both are present in an animal at the same time. The result of such combination is a great variety of the virus family. This raises the possibility that a human influenza virus can combine with an influenza virus from an animal to produce an entirely new kind. Research is being done to understand how this new type of influenza virus comes into being. Another possibility is that two types of animal influenza viruses may combine in another animal such as a pig to produce a new type which is then transmitted to humans.
