I had an interesting experience last year. After I left a small village in the south of France, I drove to the next town. On the way, a young man was standing in the road. I stopped and he asked to sit in my car. As soon as he got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he answered in the same language. Apart from a few words, I did not know any French at all. We did not speak during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, “Do you speak English?” So I soon realized that he was English himself.
