Alexander Fleming found a new medicine, penicillin, to save people’s lives. His father was sick and died when Alexander was just seven years old. Alexander lived in the home of an older brother, Tom, who was a doctor of medicine. In 1901, his uncle, John Fleming passed away and left some money for Alexander, who was 20 years old. He decided to use the money to go to medical school; he wanted to become a doctor like his successful brother, Tom. He studied medicine and three years later, he became a researcher in bacteriology. He was interested in the bodies’ natural ability to fight bacteria.
In 1914 World War I began and Fleming, aged 33, joined the army and worked in a hospital in France. There, in a series of successful experiments, he found that chemicals used to wash wounds and kill bacteria were actually killing more soldiers than the bacteria were! The chemicals used did not kill bacteria deep in wounds; worse, they were in fact destroying the soldier’s natural ability to fight bacteria because they were killing white blood cells.
In 1919 Fleming returned to research at his laboratory in London. He experimented with the liquids from the body, such as blood serum and tears, and found that bacteria would not grow where a drop of one of these liquids had been placed. In 1928, Fleming did something very important. He enjoyed the long trip with his wife and young son. On Monday, September 3, he returned to his laboratory and saw some of Petri dishes he had left open on his bench. There were colonies of bacteria in the dishes.
When Fleming looked at the dishes he found that a mold was growing and the bacterial colonies around it had been killed. Fleming published his results about this bacteria-destroying mold. He called it penicillin. It was the first use of antibiotics in modern medicine. “I certainly didn`t plan to change all medicine by discovering the world`s first antibiotic, or bacteria killer. But I think that was exactly what I did.”
