Another reason is the bella figura, which is still such an important part of Italian life. Roughly translated, this means to create a good impression on others. In order to achieve la bella figura it is quite normal for Italian youngsters to be given a brand new car at the age of 18, plus a mobile phone, and of course there will be no lack of parental handouts for new clothes, shoes, sunglasses and all those other essentials. Naturally this means there is no contribution to the housekeeping, even if the child is earning. One 35-year-old teacher, who is my friend, very honestly said, “My parents pay the bills and in exchange I’m there for them if they need me. I’m not unusual.”
