Leonardo da Vinci gets his name from the name of a village (Vinci) in Italy. It may seem surprising that he was the son of a lawyer called Piero da Antonio. Little is known of his early years except that he was born in 1452 and brought up in a clear-sighted family. His father learned about his son’s talent in drawing and took him to the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio- the most famous artist and master in painting. At the age of twenty-five he went to Florence and remained there for almost five years as an artist for himself. Then he left there for Milan where he lived for twenty years. How Leonardo spent the rest of his time in Milan is not a mystery because over 5000 pages of his notebooks have been found. He wrote from right to left to keep his notes secret. He was an engineer, architect, astronomer and an inventor. In 1516, he was invited to France by Francis. He passed away on May 2, 1519.
