Which sentence is NOT correct?
A dictionary is a collection of words with certain information attached to each word. The word “dictionaryˮ is derived from the Latin word “dictionariumˮ, initially meaning a collection of expressions and idioms. A monolingual dictionary contains descriptive information on each word, giving an explanation of what the word means, often including synonyms.
It is believed that the monolingual Dutch dictionary Woordenboek is the largest monolingual dictionary available. It took 134 years to finish, starting in 1864 and finishing only in 1998. Initially published in 40 volumes, it contained hundreds of thousands of headwords and over a million quotes from sources.
The smallest dictionary in the world, on the other hand, was 27 mm by 19 mm and had 13,000 words over 384 pages. Besides the ordinary and newest words in the language, this dictionary included short explanations of a large number of scientific, philosophical, literary, and technical terms. Bryce’s English Dictionary came in a tiny metal box. The box protected the book from damage. It also contained a strong lens on the front to help read the minute words. The dictionary could only be read by using this magnifying glass. The particular technique used to make the text so small was a printing process developed by David Bryce in 1890. He used special sheets of paper that allowed the books to be so thin despite having hundreds of pages. Portable and relatively cheap, we might say that this dictionary was an equivalent to today’s cellphones, allowing people to carry with them and access a great deal of information with ease.
